Troubleshooting

Can’t Download a Twitter/X Video? Common Causes and Fixes

When a Twitter/X video will not download, first confirm that you copied a complete public post URL containing a numeric status ID. Then match the visible error to the cause: the post may have no supported MP4, be private or unavailable, need processing DownXVideo does not provide, or be temporarily affected by rate limits or source errors. If an MP4 merely opens and plays, the parse succeeded—use your browser’s save action instead.

Paste a complete public x.com or twitter.com post URL. Do not enter a password, cookie, access token, or private link.

Public posts only. DownXVideo does not host videos, and available media links can expire.

What this guide covers

  • Errors returned by the current DownXVideo public-post parser and download flow.
  • Public x.com and twitter.com post URLs with a status or statuses ID.
  • Safe recovery steps that do not require credentials, cookies, private URLs, or access-control workarounds.
  • Browser playback and expired download links, which are different from a parser failure.

1. Confirm that you copied a post URL

A supported link uses HTTPS, an approved X/Twitter host, and a path with status or statuses followed by a numeric ID. Profile URLs, search pages, shortened text that does not resolve to a post, and copied captions fail before the parser can inspect media.

Open the exact post, choose its Share action, and copy the post link again. X documents the Copy link to Post flow in its help center.

2. Separate access problems from format problems

PRIVATE_OR_UNAVAILABLE means the parser cannot publicly access the post. A sign-in prompt, private account, deleted post, regional or age restriction, paywall, or other access control is not something DownXVideo tries to bypass.

NO_MEDIA_FOUND and REQUIRES_PROCESSING are different. The post may be public, but it may not expose a supported direct MP4. DownXVideo does not promise transcoding, HLS/DASH merging, live-stream capture, audio extraction, or an MP4 for every visible player.

3. Treat rate limits and source errors as temporary

For RATE_LIMITED, stop resubmitting and wait. For PROVIDER_TIMEOUT or PROVIDER_ERROR, keep the original public post URL and retry later. These errors describe the current request; they do not prove that the post is permanently unsupported.

Do not switch to a service that asks you to paste an X password, session cookie, or access token. DownXVideo’s recovery path never requires those secrets.

4. Re-parse expired download links

A successful parse can return a temporary same-site download URL or a source media URL. Both can stop working later. A DownXVideo proxy link is signed and short-lived, while source media URLs can also change or expire.

Return to the original post and run the parser again. Do not bookmark, publish, or repeatedly reuse the generated media URL. DownXVideo intentionally does not keep a personal download history or permanent copy of the video.

5. A playing MP4 is a saving problem, not a parse failure

If the result opens a tab and the video plays, DownXVideo found a source MP4. The browser chose playback instead of an attachment download. Use the normal save action for your device:

  • iPhone or iPad: Share, Save to Files, or an available long-press save action.
  • Android: the browser download control, menu, or available long-press action.
  • Desktop: the browser download menu or Save Video As when the MP4 is open.

Why X’s own Download video option can differ

X documents a native Download video action for eligible videos and users, while creators can control whether their uploads are downloadable in that flow. DownXVideo has a narrower technical promise: it attempts to expose supported MP4 variants from a public post, but it cannot guarantee that every public-looking video will be available or that you have reuse rights.

Frequently asked questions

Why does DownXVideo say the URL is invalid?

The link must be an HTTPS x.com or twitter.com post URL whose path contains a numeric status ID. A profile, search result, copied caption, or incomplete link is not enough.

Can I fix a PRIVATE_OR_UNAVAILABLE error by signing in?

Not through DownXVideo. The service does not accept X passwords, cookies, or access tokens and does not bypass private, deleted, restricted, or otherwise unavailable posts.

What should I do after a RATE_LIMITED error?

Wait before trying again. Repeated submissions do not make the source respond sooner and can prolong the temporary limit.

Why did a download link stop working?

Media URLs and DownXVideo download links are short-lived. Return to the original public post and parse it again instead of reusing an old MP4 or proxy URL.

Is a video that opens in a new tab a failed download?

No. If the MP4 plays, parsing succeeded and the browser opened the source file. Use the browser’s download, long-press, Share, Save to Files, or Save Video As action, depending on the device.

Will the browser extension unlock a private or unsupported video?

No. The extension shortens the workflow for supported public posts. It uses the same public-post boundary and cannot bypass access controls or create an MP4 that the parser cannot find.

Review note

This English guide was reviewed on July 22, 2026 against the current DownXVideo parser and download behavior, guide-specific project tests, and official X, Apple, Google, or Chrome documentation cited on the page. Device menus can vary by OS, browser version, region, and installed apps. This first release does not claim a new physical-device screenshot test set.
