How to Download a Twitter/X GIF and Why It Saves as MP4

Download the GIF-style animation as MP4

   Copy the public post URL

   Open the post that displays the GIF-style animation, use Share, and copy the complete x.com or twitter.com status URL.

   Find the available media

   Paste the post link into the tool on this page and select Find MP4 options. DownXVideo checks the public post for supported MP4 media.

   Choose the displayed MP4 option

   Select a quality returned for the media item. The result is an MP4 because that is the supported source variant the parser received, not because the website converted a .gif after your click.

   Save the file with the shown action

   Use Download when offered. If the result is Open MP4, save the playing file through the controls available in your browser or device.

   Keep the .mp4 extension

   The saved file should remain an MP4. Renaming it to .gif does not convert its contents and can make other apps reject or misread the file.

Why an X “GIF” can be an MP4 file

The label you see in a post describes the GIF-style viewing experience. The media information available to DownXVideo can identify that animation as animated_gif while exposing its supported source variants as video/mp4.

That is why the saved filename ends in .mp4. DownXVideo returns the supported source file; it does not download a hidden .gif and convert it after you click.

Keep the MP4 extension

Renaming animation.mp4 to animation.gif changes only the filename, not the encoded media. The renamed file can fail to open or upload because apps inspect its actual format.

If another workflow specifically requires a GIF file, that conversion is outside the current DownXVideo product. This guide does not promise a reconstructed original GIF, frame extraction, transcoding, or another output format.

What may change when you use the MP4 elsewhere

X can present the media as a silent, looping animation in its own interface. Another video player, editor, or messaging app decides whether an MP4 loops automatically, shows playback controls, or stops after one pass.

DownXVideo does not modify loop settings in another app. It also does not add, repair, separate, or extract audio. If audio matters, inspect the saved source file in your chosen player rather than assuming the GIF label guarantees a particular track.

If more than one GIF or video is attached

When the public post exposes multiple supported media items, DownXVideo separates them into individual Video groups. Choose an MP4 under each group and save the files one at a time.

A GIF-style item and an ordinary video can have different variant counts, dimensions, and save behavior. Do not assume one quality choice applies to every media item. See the multiple-video guide for the grouped result flow.

When no MP4 result appears

• Confirm that you copied the complete public post URL, not a direct image, profile, or search link.
• Open the source post and confirm that the animation is still publicly available.
• Do not provide a password, cookie, token, or private URL; DownXVideo does not use them.
• If the tool reports temporary rate limiting or a source error, wait and retry the original post later.
• If the media requires unsupported processing, DownXVideo will not promise conversion into an MP4.
